Introduction
Polio’s Last Mile is a VR/MR experience designed to spotlight the global fight against polio through immersive storytelling. Developed as an advocacy tool, the experience brings users to the front lines of door-to-door immunization efforts in Zambia, providing a firsthand look at the challenges and determination involved in eradicating the disease. By combining compelling narrative with immersive technology, Polio’s Last Mile aims to reinvigorate investment and advocacy for polio eradication.
The Challenge
Despite decades of progress in the fight against polio, the disease remains a global health threat in certain regions. Sustained advocacy, funding, and international cooperation are critical to achieving total eradication. However, maintaining awareness and urgency for a long-standing cause can be difficult, especially as public and political attention shifts to new global challenges. The key challenge was to re-engage global audiences—donors, policymakers, and the general public—by conveying the ongoing importance of polio eradication in a powerful and memorable way.
The Solution
Polio’s Last Mile was created as an immersive VR/MR experience to address the need for renewed advocacy. The experience provides a brief historical context and current status of the global polio eradication campaign, then transports users to Zambia to witness door-to-door immunization efforts. Through this firsthand perspective, the experience highlights the dedication of health workers and the logistical and human challenges involved in reaching every child with the polio vaccine.

Designed for use at global events and advocacy forums, the experience leverages the emotional impact and engagement potential of immersive media to inspire action. By allowing users to “walk alongside” health workers in the field, Polio’s Last Mile offers a unique and impactful lens on global health efforts that traditional communication methods often struggle to achieve.

The Results
Polio’s Last Mile has reached over 11,000 users through participation in more than 20 global events. The project has earned eight international awards, recognizing its innovation and impact in the field of immersive advocacy. Beyond public engagement, the experience has also helped catalyze new funding initiatives, indicating its effectiveness not only as an awareness tool but as a driver of tangible support for polio eradication.

Conclusion
Polio’s Last Mile demonstrates the power of immersive technology in global health advocacy. By bringing users directly to the front lines of immunization campaigns, the project has reinvigorated global attention toward polio eradication and supported the mobilization of new funding and support. As a VR/MR experience, it serves as a compelling example of how storytelling and technology can intersect to drive real-world impact.
