Teenage Cancer Survivor’s Pet Dragon

Introduction

Invisible Thread, a studio specializing in immersive design, partnered with Make-A-Wish America to bring to life the dream of Belle Cress, a teenage cancer survivor who had always wished for a pet dragon. Invisible Thread used virtual reality to create an unforgettable experience. The project exemplifies how immersive technology can be used to transform imagination into reality in meaningful, human-centered ways.

The Challenge

Belle was 14 years old when she completed treatment for osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. After enduring multiple surgeries and 10 months of chemotherapy, she turned to Make-A-Wish with an unusual request: to have a pet dragon. For Make-A-Wish and its partners, the challenge lay in not just creating a fantastical creature, but in designing an experience that would make Belle’s dream feel real and personal.

The Solution

Invisible Thread led the creative vision by transporting Belle into a fully virtual environment where she could take flight on her dragon and explore vast, fantastical landscapes. This immersive VR experience allowed Belle to feel what it would be like to ride her dragon, engaging her imagination beyond the limits of physical reality. Once Belle returned from the virtual world, she was greeted by a custom animatronic dragon, designed to respond to her presence. The dragon could respond to Belle’s touch, voice, and face.

The reveal took place at Colorado’s Cherokee Ranch Castle, where the transition from VR to physical reality created a seamless moment of magic. According to Project Supervisor Alex Hessler, “Bringing Belle’s wish to life was a truly rewarding experience. Seeing her face light up when she met the robotic dragon was priceless. We live for moments like these.”

The Results

The project fulfilled Belle’s lifelong dream of having a pet dragon, combining the magic of immersive storytelling with tangible robotics. Make-A-Wish America emphasized the significance of building something so unique for a single child. The story gained national attention, showcasing how immersive design and advanced engineering can bring joy and healing to children facing extraordinary challenges.

Conclusion

Invisible Thread’s work on Belle’s dragon illustrates the power of immersive design to create meaningful impact. Their collaboration with Make-A-Wish America illustrates the transformative potential of immersive storytelling. By centering the experience on Belle’s dream and using VR to make the impossible feel real, the team delivered more than a project—they delivered hope. The wish reaffirmed that immersive design is not just about technology, but about human impact.
