VR training module on risk evaluation and factory security concepts for Pilz Polska
Virtual reality is a resource-efficient training tool for procedures and processes that are difficult to explain. For Pilz Polska we have prepared a VR application that is part of training on risk evaluation and design of safety systems in production plants.
Pilz GmbH & Co. KG is technology leader in safe automation technology. In this area, Pilz is consistently developing a role as a total solutions supplier with solutions for safety and automation technology.

In traditional day-long training sessions, the challenge is to maintain students’ attention and engagement. Although trainers use teaching aids such as presentations and videos, some issues require training on working devices in factory. However, factory visits are not always possible because of location, safety regulations or the inability to halt the production line. Virtual reality was planned to be used to help circumvent these problems and add value to the existing training program run by Pilz Polska.
Together with the Pilz Polska training department, Giant Lazer developed a scenario that visualised how employees are exposed to hazard from a robot and how hardware solutions and security procedures reduce this risk. Giant Lazer suggested preparing a VR application for mobile goggles – Samsung Gear VR with Samsung Galaxy S8. Later, Giant Lazer extended hardware support was to Oculus Go VR goggles.
The user can navigate the robotic application. He can observe accidents and safety procedures from different perspectives. It is possible to enter the interior of the fence. This way we can feel the threat on our own skin. Or we can stand in a safe place out of reach of the robot. The teacher explains the risk factors and security measures.
MORE EFFECTIVE LEARNING
The use of learning through experience method improves the effectiveness of learning.
SCALABILITY OF THE SOLUTION
8 students can use the application at the same time. More sets can be added easily.
Better concentration of attention and engagement thanks to full VR immersion.
By choosing the right scenario, up to half of Pilz Polska’s training programs use this VR module.
Pilz Polska purchased 2 sets of Samsung Gear VR sets and 8 sets of Oculus Go. The VR application is used in a few of all training programs offered for the company’s clients. After several months of use, Giant Lazer can see that the half-hour VR experience is a refreshing and engaging element of a full-day training session. Participants have the opportunity to experience factory processes which helps them absorb information.
“The VR training module at Pilz is an innovative tool used in right context. It brings several useful effects such as improved students’ concentration and learning through practical examples. As a result, the effectiveness of training increased.”
