Grace Lee sought to expand her in-person date coaching service “A Good First Date” by integrating VR technology. VR compliments Lee’s service by addressing some inherent challenges to in-person date coaching.
In face-to-face date coaching sessions, clients could feel self-conscious probing into something as intimate as their personal dating life. Furthermore, Lee was limited to conducting exercises solely between herself and a client. Face-to-face exercises between two clients were inherently awkward, compromising their effectiveness for skill acquisition. Finally, date coaching was far from an exact science, as dating coaches had to draw conclusions by picking up on broad trends rather than using quantifiable data.
Foretell Reality worked with Lee to design a date coaching platform in VR where clients can practice and develop soft skills to improve their dating experience.
Avatars provide a degree of separation, generally making clients more comfortable with sharing aspects of their dating life. Anonymized avatars and a shared digital environment make partnered exercises significantly more effective, allowing clients to hone social skills with exercises involving another anonymous client.
VR’s video capture capabilities enable Lee to replay and review footage from date coaching sessions with clients to provide quantifiable, detailed, and collaborative feedback. Rather than requiring the dating coach to detect patterns and trends, playback allows Lee to quantify her observations, tallying exactly how many closed-ended questions were asked, how many times a client interrupted, etc.
Convinced of the value VR brings to date coaching, Lee is continuing to work closely with Foretell Reality. She is now incorporating VR into an upcoming date coaching service in VR, “The DatingVerse.”
