EDF Energy was looking to improve their Risk Perception training for employees. They wanted to find a solution for training employees to deal with serious health and safety risks without putting them in danger in the process. Atticus’ solution was to build a VR version of an EDF Energy power station where employees could put their health and safety training into action without the risk of harm. Employees would navigate a 360° computer generated simulation of the power station with hazards that employees would identify and address by following correct safety procedures.
Challenges
To create an environment that was an accurate representation of an EDF Energy facility, and to ensure that the experience followed legal safety codes and procedures for dealing with the various hazards. We had to ensure that not only was the gameplay comprehensive, it allowed users to accurately respond to health and safety procedures. EDF Energy wanted a way to track and evaluate employees to identify areas where further training was needed.
Solution
To create an accurate environment, Atticus mapped an EDF Energy facility using 360° images that were then converted into a precise 3D rendered environment. Atticus had to examine the extensive health and safety procedures for EDF Energy and accurately condense the data to ensure that the training experience met all of the legal safety requirements. By doing this, we created a health and safety experience that was custom to specific employee roles and their duties. Each employee received their percentage scores on completion, with a list of hazards they identified or missed once they have completed the training. Atticus programmed an algorithm to collect the output from the VR experience capturing the data for analysis and export. This information was then passed on to the the Team Leaders giving them accurate information about employee training to identify areas where further risk perception training was needed.
20% of staff said they loved it (and I mean really loved it), and 70% said they liked it. What a resounding success for our health & safety training app with a 90% approval rating!
Following the roll-out of the VR Health & Safety App we have received some great feedback, with 20% of staff saying they loved it (and I mean really loved it), and 70% saying they liked it. What a resounding success for our health & safety training app with a 90% approval rating!
Atticus has created several VR learning and development projects for EDF Energy. One of which was a 10-minute sustainability training VR experience where employees learned the business benefits of executing a series of simple sustainability actions. Previously EDF Energy staff received this training in the form of a 5-hour Powerpoint presentation and knowledge retention for this training was between 10% and 20%. The VR experience boosted knowledge retention to between 80% and 90%. Based on the success of the current VR work, we are planning new VR safety projects that include dealing with fire hazards and putting out fires using fire extinguishers and emergency evacuation procedures.
