It has been adopted for cross-disciplinary collaboration within the design and manufacturing teams, and to investigate new approaches to the way products are designed and manufactured. Rolls-Royce believe the use of advanced and immersive Visualisation technologies have the potential to revolutionise the way they engineer and deliver products, as well as in operations and services. With the typical aero engine having around 20,000 components, visualising them immersively, with a fluent frame rate, is a challenge. However, with the rich data model enabled by Visionary Render, they are able to do that, even down to individual screws.

In the UK, Visionary Render has helped Rolls-Royce to plan their factory and hazardous materials handling as well as analyse headcounts and resource loads to identify the biggest constraints. They can change things in seconds to find the best solution.

They have also been very successful in identifying issues during design reviews which would otherwise cause issues downstream. They have seen significant cost avoidance savings here, as well as other, less tangible benefits. For example, staff from all levels of the organisation can meet on equal terms in the collaborative immersive environment Visionary Render enables.

The improved communication this fosters has streamlined product flow around the factory, helped them manage resources, and mitigated manufacturing bottlenecks. In Germany too, there are significant benefits being seen. For example, in a recent, very important, research project, the team identified clashes between the component and the tool in Visionary Render before either part had been manufactured. As changes were made virtually to rectify the problem, both time and money were saved.
